Okay, so I have a funny story about dating and church. This wasn’t very long after my Internet dating sites gone bad.
I had chatted with this guy; we’ll call him Pinky the Picky Guy. During our chats, I found out that he went to the same university I did, and that we were in the band together, albeit different sections. I was thinking, finally a guy that I can talk to!
We had exchanged pictures on different occasions, and he seemed fine with a girl who had some meat on her bones, but something changed in a matter of days. He decided he wasn’t interested in me and called the whole friendship off. I say friendship because we never went out on a date. I was hurt, but the true pain in my butt came a few weeks later.
It was a Wednesday night, and I drove to my small group’s meeting place. I checked my makeup in the rearview mirror (I like looking decent when outside of my home) and exited the car into the chilly October air.
I met my girlfriends, T and L outside, and we entered together. The lights were on as the band warmed up for a night of praise and good teaching. My heart sped with the beat of the drum, and I felt like I was home. My church family was where I felt safe and loved no matter what the circumstances were outside of those walls.
We found a table and set our belongings down. I turned to get a cup of Coke when I saw Pinky the Picky Guy at my small group meeting! During our chats, I had mentioned where I went to church and how much I loved it, but after the way he ditched me, I never expected him to just show up.

We locked eyes, and I gave my best ‘whatever’ look. I saw the hint of a grin play on his lips before he turned and started talking to my friends. Like lava my anger rose to the top of my head. I spent the rest of the evening avoiding Pinky the Picky Guy and trying to concentrate on God… Not easy.
To make things worse, he joined my Sunday School group and proceeded to date every girl within that group that would accept his invitation.
It wasn’t long after this that I found a new group.
I’m not saying don’t date guys from church. Some of the best love stories happen from dating in church, but be weary of the consequences. If things do not work out and one party has gotten hurt, it can be awkward and painful. It can get so bad that, like me, you have to find another group to hang out with.
